Today is ‘Blog Action Day’ and everyone involved is writing a post about the environment. I want to keep my post brief and simply direct your attention to a website. These guys have a number of “divisions” for want of a better word, all of which seem to be extremely focused on making the world a better place, through direct action and not good intention.

In particular as we are concerned today with environmental issues, so I will specifically draw your attention to Global Energy Bank whose aim is To solve 3/4 of all world problems. Creating green energy banks around the world, providing fresh water and clean green energy to all by 2050, for FREE. Currently in discussions with our first government to provide 98% of all energy needs by 2012. An ambitous goal to be sure but I will be very interested to see how they get on.

White Orchid An Island project for girls rescued from the sex trade, currently concentrating in Asia. Building schools on Islands for rehabilitation and education. Eco-Friendly and also used as a reserve, in part for rescued animals, with breeding programmes. Reefs will be cultivated to create more breeding environments for marine life and flora & fauna will be cultivated.

Blood Rose An extraction/rescue team for girls rescued from the sex trade. Using ex-military personnel to; liaise, observe, rescue young captive girls and prevent acts of genocide.

Real Global Solutions Working with other organisations that are proactive. RGS will give solutions to any global problem, from ending world hunger to environmental concerns and solutions. More than a ‘Think Tank’ offering solutions and actively affecting this change to global problems.

Why are blogs good?

Freedom of speech

Power of the pen

Reaching the public

Raising awareness

A global discussion

The power of many

The speed of change

Interaction

Instant news and opinions

Coverups are uncovered

Easier to research an issue

Viral ideas

Created a new world

Government-influenced media bypassed

No central control

It gets you thinking

Get the low down here.. How can you help? Sign up to be a part of Blog Action Day, and join your voice with the rest of the blogging community for one day.

The initiative is a vehicle for change, a powerful concept: thousands of bloggers unite, for just one day, to talk about one issue. Will that change the world, just one day? Not immediately, but it in effect unites the blogging community. And once the community begins to unite, anything is possible.

I have stolen the copy above from the actual website, but it explains it well and it is late and I don’t feel in the mood to write.

Blogger James McGovern talked about how bloggers could change the world if they focused on others instead of themselves:

“If every blogger reading my blog instead of choosing to exercise their right to remain silent instead decided to spend just five minutes talking about poverty to one or two other individuals, poverty would be eliminated.”

I couldn’t agree more. Every once in a while I think all bloggers should use their blog to promote a good cause, so I’ve decided to jump on this bandwagon and see were it takes me, why not jump aboard!

At the weekend , whilst enjoying a day out at Ballintoy, I was able to pick up some mackerel directly from the fisherman, thus cutting out the middleman (I have nothing against middlemen per se, everyone is entitled to a living I suppose) but it was a much nicer feeling to buy direct from source. What has this got to do with open source free software or even the idea of open source everything? Maybe nothing at all, but I liked it.

Well its a bandwagon so jump on it that’s what I say…

Sarcasm to one side for a moment, I like the idea it appeals to me and I think I will contribute. If you like the idea of playing with a website build with a fancy UI that takes a little getting used to and like the idea of something of yours, tangible or not shot into space them go check it our for yourself.

The Time Capsule sets out to collect a portrait of the world – a single global image composed of millions of individual contributions. The time capsule is defined not by the few items a curator decides to include, but by the items submitted by every human on earth who wishes to participate. It hopes to reach a truly global expression of life on earth – nuanced, diverse, beautiful and ugly, thrilling and terrifying, touching and rude, serious and absurd, frank, honest, human.

The Time Capsule itself is realized digitally so that the maximum number of people can have access. It is organized around ten themes, chosen to illuminate different corners of the human experience. The ten themes are: Love, Sorrow, Anger, Faith, Beauty, Fun, Past, Hope, Now, and You. Each theme harbors an open-ended question: What do you love? What makes you sad? What makes you angry? What do you believe in? What’ beautiful? What’ fun? What do you remember? What is your wish? Describe your world. Who are you? People respond to these questions in five simple ways – with words, pictures, videos, sounds, and drawings.

The last two paragraphs were not my words but rather stolen from the about page!

I have a disc of Fedora Core 5 (Linux) to install and will also try to track down a copy of vista to try out. Its all running on XP. Unfortunately I have gotten myself bogged down before I really got started. Network Issues. So bare with me and and I’ll write it all up when I get things sorted out.

Not something that happens often so I wanted to record the event. I saw the plume of water and a breach from a distance of around 500-700m away, so unable to determine the species, probably minke though, which are known to pass through the waters off Malin Head, Donegal. By the time we would have got to her she would have dived, so no chance to dive with her, anyway as far as I know correct boat etiquette requires us to stay a certain distance away so it would only be if the whale swam to us that we would get the chance to jump in and snorkle. I am still hopeful to see one of these magnicifcant beasts under water in the wild..face to face!

Would I recommend it?…an unquestionable yes. I liked to credit Zoe here for the summary of the holiday she wrote. I have plagiarised it for now, but hope to rewrite it in the next day or two. Don’t forget to come back for the holiday from My perspective.

I have a deadline to meet – Mañana Dave!

We arrived into Cancun airport where we picked up our hire car and drove off towards Tulum, except that we actually headed towards Cancun centre as the hurricane had removed most of the road signs. It is pretty difficult to drive on the opposite side of the road, harder to do it without signage, and even harder to do it in the dark but I coped well; even when we flew over our first huge speed bump – oops, where did that come from!

Our first night was spent next to the Caribbean sea, in a rustic palapa roofed cabana. We were tired from our journey and fell asleep at what we thought was 8.00pm except it was only 7.00pm as the idiot steward on the plane had given us the wrong local time and we weren’t alert enough to realise he was wrong.

The next day we left Tulum, knowing that we would be returning the following week, and headed inland towards Valladolid along the most hideous pot-holed road. In Valladolid we took a Superior room in El Meson del Marque’s and ate delicious food for dinner. It was the best food we had all holiday but as it was our first food we didn’t realise at the time just how special it was.

From Valladolid we travelled to Merida via Chichen Itza. Merida was wonderful, in my opinion. But by the time we left I felt very comfortable there and wished that I had the opportunity to see more and have a kitchen available to me so that we could buy the wonderful foods from the market and cook amazing meals We wandered the streets, visited art galleries and museums, and took a bus tour of the city at night.

From Merida we travelled to Playa del Carmen on the toll road via Cancun, where we once again headed towards the centre of Cancun rather than down the coast! Initially I didn’t think too much of Playa del Carmen, it was too touristy for my liking but an essential stop for me to do some diving (more of which later) It had it’s good points as well as bad points; it was an excellent place for people watching and had a good selection of places to eat. When Ias unable to dive due to a tropical storm Zoe and i went snorkeling in a lagoon and in a cenote.

Finally, we returned to Tulum and chilled out at the Diamante K. We went on a trip to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, got eaten alive by mosquitos, woke up to find a dead rat on the floor of our cabana, ate delicious food and had a generally pleasant time.

Highlights: Food, Diving in Cozumel, Biosphere Reserve, Cenote Diving, Architecture, Diverse Culture, Chilled atmosphere, in no particular order.
